To define stuttering, or stammering, it is necessary to emphasize that this problem is not one of language, but rather one of relationship. A fundamental element of this disorder is the control of speech and of the entire phonatory component, as Dr. Antonio Bitetti has long maintained (Bitetti A., 2001, 2006, 2010, 2016).
Upon closer consideration, we can say that the language difficulty to which everyone refers represents only the final, peripheral element of this problem. The true reason why a person stutters lies in the emotional dynamics of the individual who stutters.
There is no synergy between thought and the realistic possibility of expressing, through language, one’s full cognitive and emotional potential. The person who stutters censors a large part of the emotional component of their life. They experience difficulty in trustfully surrendering to their emotions and, perhaps, also to the relational value of those very emotions.
Especially in cases of stuttering with a strong tonic component, we find a marked element of blockage in propulsion and a significant censorship of basic energy.
Those who stutter are blocked in their words, but they are equally blocked, more generally, in their ability to live their own energies in a genuine way. This is why their body, at times, also seems constrained and trapped in a condition of stagnation.
While a fluent speaker does not stutter and does not control speech, the person who stutters learns from an early age to do something they should not do. They keep their phonatory articulation under constant observation—that is, they obsessively control their mouth.
These are the studies that Dr. Bitetti has introduced in this specific field, with the aim of clearly explaining what lies behind the problem of stuttering.
His publications, which have also been translated abroad, represent the most extensive and advanced scientific research in this field (Bitetti A., 2001, 2006, 2010, 2016). In a context where there is often only marketing, these publications testify to the seriousness and interpretative rigor of scientific research in this area.
